Battery Terminal Corrosion Prevention

Battery Leaking

Cleaning car battery corrosion is a simple, straightforward process, but it’s even easier to prevent corrosion in the first place! There are many battery terminal corrosion prevention sprays on the market today, but even vaseline or dielectric grease will work in a pinch. You’ll just need to apply the product to your terminals when you install a new battery! The team at our parts department has what you need in stock, and we can help you find the perfect solution today.

How to Prevent Car Battery Terminal Corrosion

Now that you know what to put on battery terminals to prevent corrosion, you shouldn’t ever have to worry about cleaning corroded terminals. Still, it’s a good idea to review the process that’s required to prevent corrosion in the first place.

Working with car batteries can be dangerous, so you should always exercise caution and wear electrical safety gloves. A respirator is also recommended, especially if you’re working in a closed space. Now, here’s how to prevent corrosion whenever you replace your battery:

  1. When you remove your old battery, use a cleaning solution or a mixture of baking soda and water to wipe down the battery casing. If any residual corrosion remains on the cables, clean those too.
  2. Now, get your new car battery into position.
  3. Apply a small amount of anti-corrosion spray or anti-corrosion gel to your battery terminals. This should be sufficient to prevent any corrosion that might occur.

If you’re scheduling battery replacement at our dealership in Englewood, ask a technician to apply an anti-corrosion product to your terminals as part of the installation process.

What Causes Battery Terminal Corrosion?

Unless you apply a protective coating to your terminals, battery corrosion is a natural, normal byproduct of your battery’s behavior. Large automotive batteries heat up and cool down as you drive through Jersey City, and this process releases hydrogen gas. When this hydrogen gas comes into contact with the electrically charged terminals, corrosion is a natural result.

Since the corrosion is normal, knowing what causes battery terminal corrosion won’t necessarily help you prevent the issue—but it should underscore the importance of protecting your terminals during the installation process.
